CHSL vs NTPC 2026: Which 12th-Pass Government Job Fits You

By RAUSHAN VERMA · Last updated 25 August 2026

CHSL vs NTPC is the 12th pass choice that actually exists. Combined Graduate Level wants a degree. Group D wants a Physical Efficiency Test run. You have Class 12. Two exams fit on paper. They do not fit on the same calendar today.

As of 25 August 2026: what is live

RRB NTPC undergraduate — Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) 07/2025 — is not open for a fresh form. Applications closed months ago. Computer Based Test 1 ran May–June 2026. Late-August zone lists and scorecards are being posted on regional RRB sites. If you did not sit that CBT-1, “pick NTPC” now means wait for the next CEN. That wait has historically been years, not weeks.

SSC CHSL 2026 is the form to watch this fortnight. The Commission’s calendar had an April advertisement slot. Several desks still say the detailed notice may land by end-August. Open ssc.gov.in yourself. If the notice is up, apply. If it isn’t, keep papers ready. Don’t take a coaching “tomorrow” as a gazette.

Hub pages: rrbcdg.gov.in and the SSC examination calendar. Result PDFs sit on your regional RRB site, not on a random “result out” card.

CHSL vs NTPC in one table

Parameter SSC CHSL (12th pass) RRB NTPC UG (12th pass)
Education Class 12 Class 12
Typical age 18–27 18–30 / 18–33 (that CEN)
Key posts LDC, JSA, DEO Grade A Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk, Trains Clerk, Ticket Clerk
7th CPC basic LDC/JSA Level 2 ₹19,900; DEO Level 4 ₹25,500 or Level 5 ₹29,200 Junior / Accounts / Trains Clerk Level 2 ₹19,900; Commercial cum Ticket Clerk Level 3 ₹21,700
Pattern Tier 1 screen + Tier 2 merit, computer, typing / Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) CBT-1 screen + CBT-2 merit + typing on listed posts
Workplace Ministries and attached offices Stations, divisional offices, depots
Duty Office hours (BRO is the exception) Day/night roster on many station posts
Medical Civil fitness, except BRO physicals A-3 Trains Clerk; B-2 Ticket Clerk; C-2 Junior/Accounts Clerk
This cycle (Aug 2026) Notification window to watch Apply closed; CBT-1 over; CBT-2 for qualifiers

Data Entry Operator is not “Level 4/5 ₹25,500+”. Level 4 starts ₹25,500. Level 5 starts ₹29,200. The ministry decides which DEO you get. That gap is a real monthly difference, not a rounding error.

Trains Clerk is Level 2, basic ₹19,900 — same pay band as Junior Clerk, much tougher medical. Don’t pick it for money. Pick it only if A-3 will pass.

What's confirmed, what's still a guess

Pasted image

Confirmed: 12th for both. Confirmed: pay levels named above. Confirmed: A-3 / B-2 / C-2 split used in NTPC UG annexures — still match the CEN you actually applied under. Confirmed: CHSL age is usually 18–27. Confirmed: this NTPC UG cycle is past apply. Confirmed: SSC tries to run CHSL every year; NTPC has left multi-year holes (2019 to 2024 is the one people still taste).

Not confirmed: CHSL 2026 vacancy until the PDF exists. Not confirmed: your city. Not confirmed: a frozen typing error percentage (labs have used about 5% or 7% for unreserved; one cycle talked 3% — the on-screen instruction wins). Not confirmed: next NTPC UG year. Anyone selling that date is guessing.

Who should screenshot this

If this is you Lean Don’t tick
Need a form in the next few weeks CHSL 2026, if/when the notice is live A new NTPC UG apply — it isn’t open
English is fine, nights make you mean CHSL LDC / JSA Ticket clerk
Fast, accurate hands DEO — only if DEST numbers don’t scare you DEO “for the extra pay” with slow typing
High power or colour issues C-2 Junior / Accounts Clerk (next NTPC cycle) A-3 Trains Clerk
Already had LASIK CHSL desk / C-2 clerks later A-category railway posts
Age 26–27 CHSL this year if you still fit 18–27 Waiting years for NTPC as Plan A
Cannot run a timed mile Normal CHSL departments BRO LDC/DEO

Medical: A-3, B-2, C-2 — know your class before you apply

Trains Clerk: A-3. Distant vision 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses. Colour vision, binocular vision, field of vision, night vision — all must pass. LASIK is barred on A-category posts. Surgery already done? This seat is a wall, not a backup.

Commercial cum Ticket Clerk: B-2. Softer than A-3. Still not “any glasses, any colour miss.” If a signal colour fails under test, the window is gone.

Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk: C-2. Softest of the three. High power and colour-blind candidates often live here when A-3 and B-2 will not. Safest is not “no test.”

CHSL LDC / JSA / DEO in a normal ministry: civil fitness. The landmine is Border Roads Organisation. Some LDC/DEO vacancies under BRO are male-only, with a 1-mile run in a printed time plus tighter medical. Tick BRO for “more posts” and Document Verification (DV) will throw you. Untick it unless you can run the mile and live in a project camp.

Skill test: 15 minutes versus 10

CHSL typing / DEST is 15 minutes. English LDC/JSA: 35 words per minute — often 1,750 keystrokes in 15 minutes, or about 10,500 Key Depressions Per Hour (KDPH). Hindi: 30 wpm, about 9,000 KDPH. Data Entry Operator DEST: about 15,000 or 8,000 KDPH, department-wise. DEO is not LDC with extra cash. It is a different pair of hands.

NTPC clerk typing on listed posts: 10 minutes. English 30 wpm. Hindi 25 wpm. Fail it and CBT-2 is a PDF you print for your parents.

Error percentage: treat 5–7% as a rumour until the live screen says the number. Backspace may exist in the software; wrong keys can still count. Practise as if every miss stays. Font: Hindi typists, read Kruti Dev versus Unicode in the notice before your fingers learn the wrong map.

Negative marking: the two knives

CHSL Tier 1: +2, −0.50 (one-fourth). Tier 2: 3-mark questions, −1 for a wrong (one-third). NTPC UG CBT-1 and CBT-2: one-third of that question’s marks for a wrong. Guess only after two options die. Blank is a skill. Your mock should show skips, not just score.

The job at 11 a.m. and at 1 a.m.

LDC / JSA: dak, noting, the letter in the right tray. Many seats end in the evening. Promotion is slow: LDC to UDC to assistant. You will not become a minister. You can become the person who knows the file.

Data Entry Operator: software and DEST. If 15,000 KDPH makes your wrists itch, don’t tick DEO for Level 4 or Level 5.

Commercial cum Ticket Clerk: UTS, PRS, a lost ticket, a waitlist fight. Night chart. Passes and colonies are real. So is a roster that skips your sister’s wedding. B-2 sits on this seat.

Junior Clerk / Accounts Clerk: CHSL-like room, railway map, C-2. Trains Clerk: Level 2 ₹19,900, A-3, consist numbers, no LASIK. Less shouting than tickets. More “your figure was wrong.”

BRO: the CHSL landmine

Most CHSL posts are chair and file. BRO is a field organisation. Male-only on some LDC/DEO vacancies. Physical: 1-mile run inside a time they print in the annexure. Medical tighter than a secretariat LDC. Preference lists that auto-include BRO because “more posts” are how people cry at DV. Untick it unless you can run the mile and stay in a project camp.

Your 12th certificate, their sarkari story

Parents hear government job and stop listening. The certificate in your drawer only matches these two central exams. One is a yearly SSC drum, if you stay in age. One is an RRB wait that can last years. One chair. One window. Three railway eye classes that will not negotiate.

SSC drums CHSL about once a year. That is why 12th pass kids should treat CHSL as the spine in 2026. NTPC UG, this cycle, is already a result-and-CBT-2 story. The next undergraduate CEN is not a date I will invent. 2019-to-2024 waiters lost CHSL age while refreshing RRB. Don’t repeat that.

If you already sat NTPC UG CBT-1: watch your regional RRB login. Prepare typing and CBT-2 if you are in. If you did not sit it: CHSL papers, documents, typing — this month. Dual study of maths and reasoning still helps later. It does not open a closed CEN.

FAQ

Can I do LASIK and still get Trains Clerk?

No. A-3 bars LASIK. Don’t argue with a railway doctor using a YouTube short.

What is the CHSL age limit?

Usually 18–27 for most posts, counted on the date in that notice. Relaxation is category-wise. Print the notice date. Don’t guess.

Is Ticket Clerk paid more than Trains Clerk?

Yes on basic pay. Ticket Clerk is Level 3 ₹21,700. Trains Clerk is Level 2 ₹19,900. Ticket Clerk wants B-2 and nights. Trains Clerk wants A-3 vision.

DEO Level 4 or Level 5 — which will I get?

The vacancy table in the CHSL notice. Some departments post Level 4 (₹25,500). Others Level 5 (₹29,200). Preference order plus rank, not a reel.

Can I apply for NTPC UG tomorrow?

Not this CEN. 07/2025 apply is closed. Next cycle: wait for a new notice on rrbcdg.gov.in. Until then, CHSL is the live 12th-pass central form to watch.

Should I tick BRO for extra vacancies?

Only if you are eligible on gender, can run the printed mile, and will take project posting. Otherwise it is a DV trap.

Is typing qualifying or merit?

On both exams it is a filter on listed posts. Fail the speed or DEST and the written rank dies. Start this week, not after the admit card.

Four lines: the CHSL vs NTPC verdict

CHSL vs NTPC today is not a philosophical draw. NTPC UG this cycle is closed for new applicants. CHSL 2026 is the notice on the table — or about to be. Same 12th certificate. Different clock.

LDC and Junior Clerk and Trains Clerk start near ₹19,900. DEO is ₹25,500 or ₹29,200, not a mashed figure. Ticket clerk is ₹21,700, B-2, nights. A-3 is vision. BRO is a run.

Confirmed: table, medical letters, typing durations, negative marking, this cycle’s status as of 25 August 2026. Not confirmed: CHSL vacancy, next NTPC year, your posting, a frozen error percentage.

Open the SSC PDF when it is up. If you sat NTPC CBT-1, open the regional result. Untick BRO if you cannot run. Untick A-3 if you cannot pass 6/9 with colour and night vision. Then type every day.
