Pathirage was previously a fast-medium cricket bowler in Sri Lanka's domestic circuit before coach Tony Prasanna converted his shoulder mobility and runway speed into elite javelin technique. He threw a national-record 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League earlier in 2026, the season's world-leading distance, before topping it with his Glasgow gold.
