The detailed notification for RRB JE under CEN 04/2026 is out and applications are already open. This is one of the better technical recruitments Indian Railways has released in recent years. Total posts stand at 3,993 for Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent. For diploma and degree holders in engineering, this is a solid Level-6 opportunity.
Many candidates just look at the total number and move on. That is a mistake. The real picture becomes clear only when you see the zone-wise distribution, the exact medical standards, the technical syllabus weightage, and how the salary actually looks after deductions. This guide covers all of that without the usual fluff.

Important Dates You Should Not Miss
Online applications started on 14 August 2026. The last date to submit the form is 13 September 2026 (23:59 hrs). Fee payment window closes on 15 September. Correction window will open from 16 to 25 September. CBT dates have not been announced yet, which is normal at this stage.
Keep checking the official RRB websites regularly. Do not wait for last-minute panic.
Total Vacancies and Category Breakup
Total posts: 3,993
- UR – 1,699
- OBC – 913
- EWS – 394
- SC – 624
- ST – 363
These numbers include horizontal reservation for Ex-Servicemen and PwBD. Vacancies can still increase or decrease slightly based on Railway requirements, but the current figure is reliable.
RRB-wise Vacancy Distribution
Kolkata RRB has the highest share at 457 posts. Mumbai follows with 411, then Chennai with 362. Guwahati has 329 and Prayagraj 340. Smaller RRBs like Malda (30) and Muzaffarpur (17) have limited seats, so competition there will be different.
If you have a preference for a particular zone, check the exact post-wise distribution in Annexure B of the official notification before locking your RRB choice. Once you select one RRB, you cannot change it later.
Eligibility – Age and Qualification
Age limit is 18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027. That means candidates born between 2 January 1994 and 1 January 2009 (for UR/EWS). OBC gets three years relaxation and SC/ST gets five years. PwBD candidates get further relaxation as per rules.
Educational qualification is straightforward but post-specific. For most Junior Engineer posts you need a three-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, etc.) or a combination of sub-streams. Higher qualification like B.E./B.Tech in the same discipline is also accepted. For Depot Material Superintendent, a three-year diploma in any engineering discipline is enough.
Make sure your diploma or degree is from a recognised institute and you already hold the certificate on or before 13 September 2026. Provisional certificates are usually accepted at the application stage, but original documents will be checked later.
Selection Process
There are four stages:
- CBT-1 (screening)
- CBT-2 (main exam with technical weightage)
- Document Verification
- Medical Examination
Only those who clear CBT-1 in sufficient numbers are called for CBT-2. Final merit is prepared on the basis of CBT-2 marks only, subject to clearing DV and medical.
Exam Pattern – CBT 1 and CBT 2
CBT-1 (90 minutes, 100 questions)
- Mathematics – 30 questions
- General Intelligence & Reasoning – 25
- General Awareness – 15
- General Science – 30
Negative marking is one-third. This stage is only for shortlisting.
CBT-2 (120 minutes, 150 questions)
- General Awareness – 15
- Physics & Chemistry – 15
- Basics of Computers and Applications – 10
- Basics of Environment and Pollution Control – 10
- Technical Abilities – 100
The technical section carries two-thirds of the total marks. That is where the real selection happens. Candidates who are weak in their core engineering subject will find it difficult to recover even if they score well in the general sections.
Syllabus Overview
CBT-1 syllabus is mostly Class 10 level for Science and standard competitive level for Maths and Reasoning. Current affairs and basic Indian polity, geography and economy appear in General Awareness.
In CBT-2 the technical syllabus is branch-specific. For Electrical it covers basic electrical engineering, machines, power systems, measurements, etc. Mechanical candidates face strength of materials, thermodynamics, manufacturing, fluid mechanics and related topics. Civil has building materials, surveying, soil mechanics, RCC, steel structures and so on. Electronics candidates have their own set of topics.
The official notification has separate annexures for each engineering group. Download the PDF and mark only the topics relevant to your diploma/degree. Do not waste time on subjects outside your stream.
Salary Structure – What You Actually Get
Basic pay starts at ₹35,400 under Level 6 of the 7th CPC. During training the salary is lower because full allowances are not paid. After training and posting, the picture improves.
Approximate gross salary in a major city currently falls in the range of ₹55,000 to ₹65,000 depending on the DA rate and HRA. After NPS contribution, professional tax and other deductions, most new JEs take home somewhere between ₹45,000 and ₹55,000 in the first year. Those posted in X-category cities with higher HRA get more. Those who get railway quarters save on rent and effectively increase their in-hand amount.
Additional benefits include free/concessional railway passes, medical facilities for self and family, leave travel concession, and children’s education allowance. Promotion path usually goes to Senior Section Engineer and then to higher grades over time.
Preparation Strategy That Actually Works
First, finish the non-technical portion of CBT-1 thoroughly. Mathematics and Reasoning can be scored if you practice regularly. General Science should be revised from Class 9–10 NCERT. Keep a monthly current affairs notebook.
For CBT-2, the technical section decides everything. Collect previous year papers of RRB JE for your branch and analyse the repeated topics. Most questions come from core diploma-level subjects. Make short notes of formulas and important concepts. Solve at least 40–50 technical questions every day once the application window closes.
Do not ignore the small sections in CBT-2 — Computers, Environment, Physics & Chemistry. Together they carry 50 marks. Many candidates lose easy marks here because they focus only on the technical 100.
Take full-length mock tests under timed conditions. Analyse every wrong answer. That habit alone separates those who just appear from those who get selected.
Final Points Before You Apply
Choose your RRB carefully after checking the vacancy table. Fill the form with correct details, especially date of birth, community and educational qualification. Keep scanned documents ready in the prescribed size. Pay the fee on time.

This recruitment is competitive, but the number of posts is decent and the pay is respectable for a first government job. Candidates who treat the technical syllabus seriously and stay consistent with practice stand a real chance.
The official notification PDF is available on the RRB websites. Download it, read the post parameters carefully, and then start your preparation without delay.
