India-UK CETA and Double Contribution Convention Come Into Force
The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the accompanying Double Contribution Convention officially entered into force on 15 July 2026, India's sixth implemented FTA under the current government.
- CETA was signed on 25 July 2025 after 14 rounds of negotiations and came into force on 15 July 2026, alongside the Double Contribution Convention (DCC) on social security.
- The UK will eliminate duties on 99% of Indian tariff lines immediately, removing tariffs of up to 70% on processed foods, 21.5% on marine products, and 12% on textiles and clothing.
- It is India's most comprehensive trade agreement with a G7 nation and the UK's most significant bilateral FTA since leaving the EU.
- The DCC prevents double social security contributions for workers temporarily posted between the two countries, benefiting Indian professionals in the UK.
Exam Context: GS-3 (Economy/IR). CETA = 6th FTA implemented by India since 2014. DCC = social security totalisation agreement, similar to India's pacts with other countries. Compare with India's UAE CEPA and Australia ECTA.
