India Ratifies WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, Becomes 123rd Member
India formally deposited its instrument of acceptance for the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies in Geneva on 20 July, becoming the 123rd member to join the pact — the first-ever multilateral WTO accord with an environmental sustainability objective.
- Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal deposited India's Instrument of Acceptance with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
- The agreement bans harmful subsidies for Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, fishing of overfished stocks, and unregulated high-seas fishing.
- Inland fisheries and aquaculture — including India's shrimp export sector — remain outside the agreement's scope, protecting small-scale coastal fishers.
- Adopted at the WTO's 12th Ministerial Conference (June 2022), the pact entered into force in September 2025 after two-thirds of members ratified it.
