Parliament Passes Bill Giving Legal Protection to Vande Mataram

Both Houses of Parliament passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, bringing Vande Mataram under the same legal protection as the National Anthem, Flag and Constitution.

  • Amends the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
  • Intentionally insulting, obstructing or disturbing the singing of Vande Mataram is now a punishable offence: up to 3 years imprisonment, fine, or both.
  • Second and subsequent conviction carries a minimum one-year jail term.
  • Passed by Rajya Sabha on 29 July and Lok Sabha on 30 July 2026 amid Opposition protests; now awaits Presidential assent.
